Suite à l’AG extraordinaire du 19 octobre à 16h30 en salle G073, nous aurons le plaisir d’assister à la séance inaugurale du séminaire VALE de l’année sur le thème « Living Matters/Matières vivantes » animée par Anne-Valérie Dulac, Charlotte Ribeyrol et Thomas Constantinesco à 17h30, toujours dans la salle G073. En écho au tournant matériel qui transforme aujourd’hui le champ des humanités, la thématique proposée nous permettra de repenser l’organicité de l’œuvre-corpus à l’aune des ‘matières vibrantes’ (Jane Bennett) qu’elle peut être amenée à mettre en scène ou dans lesquelles elle trouve parfois à s’incarner. L’idée d’une vibration ou d’une vitalité intrinsèque à la matérialité, qui ne serait pas nécessairement ancrée dans l’organique ou le physiologique, permet de dépasser le clivage classique entre matière inerte et vie animée et engage une conception nécessairement interdisciplinaire de la littérature et des arts. En se déployant à la frontière labile entre l’organique et l’inorganique, le matériel et l’immatériel, mais aussi l’humain et le non-humain ou encore l’animal, le végétal et le minéral, notre réflexion pourra ainsi faire dialoguer littérature, arts de la scène et du vivant, histoire de l’art, sciences du vivant, chimie, humanités médicales et/ou écologie.

In the wake of the material turn and its transformative effects on the humanities, “Living Matter(s)” is an invitation to reconsider the organicity of the oeuvre-as-corpus through the prism of what Jane Bennett has called “vibrant matter,” which artworks repeatedly stage and sometimes embody. The notion of vibrancy, of matter’s intrinsic “animacy” (Mel Chen), in excess of the organic or the physiological, helps to move past the classic binarism between inanimate matter and animated life, calling for an approach to literature and the arts at the crossroads of disciplinary formations. Inhabiting the moving frontier between the organic and the inorganic, the material and the immaterial, but also the human and the non-human, as well as the animal, the vegetal, and the mineral, this proposed seminar intends to be a site for a series of robust conversations between literary studies, performance studies, art history, life sciences, chemistry, medical humanities and environmental humanities.
