The News Imaginary

A decade of scholarship has transformed how we understand news communication in early modern Europe. We understand a good deal more about the international flows of news, and the material infrastructure that supported them. But how did people see this? How did conceive of the ways in which news has transformed their world? News communication creates a culture in which there is a news imaginary, an imaginaire des nouvelles. News shaped (and shapes) the world we see around us. It filters our experience. This paper will think through the subjective, imaginative and creative responses – in various European vernaculars – to the pervasive culture of news shaping early modern Europe, and consider how these constitute a kind of world as imagined by news?

Joad Raymond is a Welsh academic and writer, and Professor of Renaissance Studies at Queen Mary University of London. He is the author and editor of twelve books, about sixteenth-and seventeenth-century literature and history, especially the history of news in Europe. He is presently completing a book, provisionally entitled The News in Europe for Penguin books, and editing Milton’s Latin Prose for the Oxford edition of the Complete Works of John Milton. He collaborates with other London musicians under the name ‘The Unattached’, and has released an album entitled Songs for the Prophets (WIAIWYA, 2019), exploring the relationship between music and history.
