Charlotte Ribeyrol est Professeur de Littérature britannique du XIXème siècle à Sorbonne Université où elle enseigne la littérature et l’histoire de l’art britanniques depuis 2009. Membre Junior de l'Institut Universitaire de France, ses recherches portent sur l'hellénisme victorien ainsi que sur la couleur en peinture et en poésie. Elle a publié et co-édité plusieurs ouvrages sur ces sujets, notamment Inventer la peinture grecque antique (avec S. Alexandre et N. Philippe), ENS Editions, 2012; “Etrangeté, passion, couleur”, L’hellénisme de Swinburne, Pater et Symonds, ELLUG, 2013; Antique bodies in Nineteenth Century British Literature and Culture (avec C. Bertonèche) Miranda, n°11, 2015 ; Late Victorian Paganism (avec C. Murray) aux Cahiers Victoriens et Edouardiens, 2015 et The Colours of the Past in Victorian England (Peter Lang, Oxford, 2016). Depuis 2014, elle s’est engagée dans plusieurs projets interdisciplinaires (POLYRE; COPAST) autour de la matérialité chromatique et sa réception au 19ème siècle. Elle vient de publier chez Yale University Press un ouvrage sur les couleurs de la grande bibliothèque de William Burges (Ashmolean, Oxford) en lien avec son projet ERC Consolidator CHROMOTOPE (2019-2024 Sorbonne Université/Oxford/CNAM) qui explore l’impact littéraire et pictural du tournant chromatique des années 1850.

 

Charlotte Ribeyrol is Professor at Sorbonne Université and a Junior Member of the Institut Universitaire de France. Her main field of research is Victorian Hellenism and the reception of the colours of the past in 19th-century painting and literature. Her first monograph entitled “Etrangeté, passion, couleur”, L’hellénisme de Swinburne, Pater et Symonds came out in 2013. She has since guest-edited two special issues on the subject of Victorian paganism in international peer-reviewed journals and contributed to The Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature (2015) and Pater the Classicist (OUP, 2017). In 2014-2016 she co-directed a major interdisciplinary project on chromatic materiality (POLYRE, IDEX Sorbonne Universités) with chemists and archeologists, which led to the publication of a collection of essays entitled The Colours of the Past in Victorian England (Peter Lang, Oxford, 2016). Following her Marie Curie Fellowship at Trinity College, Oxford (2016-2018), she was awarded an ERC consolidator grant for her project CHROMOTOPE (2019-2024) which will explore the 19th century ‘chromatic turn’. Her book on the colours of William Burges’s Great Bookcase in the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford came out in June 2023 (Yale UP).
