THE NEW WAVE OF BRITISH WOMEN PLAYWRIGHTS
EXPERIMENTING WITH FORMS
Today’s British stage resounds with powerfully innovative female voices. The Royal Court 2019 season gives evidence of the growing prominence of these female writers who promote a strikingly poignant dramaturgy, sometimes inventing radically new forms and sometimes experimenting with conventional ones in fresh and unexpected ways, as for example when they re-energize naturalism and provide it with new missions. Their plays are always concerned with the necessity to grasp the complexity of the contemporary world and to further investigate what it means to be human. Intimate or epic, and sometimes both at once, visionary or closer to everyday life, these plays approach the contemporary world through a multitude of prisms – historical, scientific, political and poetic – and open different and visionary perspectives.
This one-day conference will pave the way for a publication whose mission will be, twenty years after Sarah Kane’s death and while Caryl Churchill is celebrating her 81th birthday, to affirm the vitality, the inventiveness and the particularly strong relevance of these new poetics.
We will welcome contributions in the shape of 15 minute provocations addressing the theatre of major women playwrights such as debbie tucker green, Lucy Kirkwood, Alice Birch, Laura Wade, Lucy Prebble, or Ella Hickson, all the way to the emerging new voices (as, for instance, those of Bola Agbaje, Lydia Adetunji, Alia Bano, or Stella Feehily, Katherine Soper and Polly Stenham). This is a non-exhaustive list as the aim of this conference will also be to bring as-of-yet undiscovered writers to light.

La scène anglaise, et la programmation 2019 du Royal Court en donne une nouvelle fois la preuve, fait émerger de plus en plus de voix féminines fortes. Avec elles, ce sont des dramaturgies efficaces, qui parfois s’attèlent à expérimenter de nouvelles formes soit en revisitant des poétiques déjà fortement codifiées – comme lorsqu’elles réénergisent l’écriture naturaliste pour lui conférer de nouvelles missions –, soit en inventant des formes toujours nouvelles, toujours plus à même de cerner la complexité du monde contemporain et de comprendre ce qui, au fond, constitue l’humain. Intimistes ou épiques, et parfois les deux à la fois, visionnaires ou au plus près du quotidien, ces écritures mettent en forme le monde à travers une multitude de prismes – historiques, scientifiques, politiques et poétiques – qui ouvrent d’autres perspectives et les disent dans d’autres langages.
Il s’agira dans cette journée d’étude de préparer une publication qui fasse émerger, vingt ans après la mort de Sarah Kane, et alors que Caryl Churchill célèbre ses quatre-vingt-un ans, des écritures, scandaleuses ou en clair-obscur, qui s’ancrent dans un héritage pour construire de nouveaux chemins de traverse et réaffirmer la nécessité du théâtre.
Les contributions, en forme de « provocations » de 15 minutes, pourront donc aborder le théâtre maintenant très en lumière de debbie tucker green, Lucy Kirkwood, Alice Birch, Laura Wade, Lucy Prebble, Ella Hickson, mais aussi dessiner les poétiques à l’œuvre dans les écritures naissantes (comme, par exemple, celles de Bola Agbaje, Lydia Adetunji, Alia Bano, Stella Feehily ou encore Katherine Soper, Polly Stenham et bien d’autres) que cette journée aura pour vocation de faire découvrir.
