SUMMARY:SEM PACT « Surveillance Imaginings »
DESCRIPTION:Surveillance Aesthetics & Machinic Poetics in Contemporary Literary Fiction \nThis talk will consider an aesthetic and poetic ‘turn’ in recent literary fiction concerned with themes of surveillance in novels such as Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West (2017) and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun (2021). Focusing on the affective states and subjective representation of surveillance in the contemporary novel\, it will explore how the experience of digital surveillance is characterised as much by the aesthetic (popular culture\, formalism\, visuality\, imagery) as it is by the technological (machines\, data\, artificial intelligence\, infrastructure). It asks how emergent surveillant subjectivities are being articulated through literary language\, a form in which rhetorical\, semantic\, and affective subtleties are represented and worked out. By turning to poetics—as a heuristic for moving beyond technological determinism—the talk argues for the significance of literary fiction as a crucial space for probing the ethical and cultural implications of contemporary surveillance in relation to the self\, critical thinking\, and creative expression. \n  \nTyne Daile Sumner is a researcher in The School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. Working across literary studies\, surveillance studies and digital humanities\, her research examines cultural representations of surveillance in literature\, film\, art\, popular media and public discourse. Her first book is Lyric Eye: The Poetics of Twentieth-Century Surveillance (Routledge 2021). SUMMARY:SEM Transculturalismes :  Corentin Jégou\, "Pieces of Utopia: Imagining globalisation in anglophone Caribbean literature"
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia Wynter’s The Hills of Hebron (1962) and Robert Antoni’s As Flies to Whatless Boys (2013) both revolve around utopian schemes\, set in Jamaica and Trinidad respectively. Wynter’s novel chronicles the establishment of a millenarian commune by Prophet Moses and his followers at the turn of the twentieth century\, while Antoni’s narrative relates the tribulations of the socialistic Tropical Emigration Society in the 1840s. In both cases\, the utopian enterprise meets with disaster. The prophets turn out to be charlatans\, bent on personal aggrandisement at the expense of their unsuspecting disciples. \nIn this paper\, I explore the political and aesthetic underpinnings of Wynter’s and Antoni’s failed utopias. While they both seem to share in the anti-utopian scepticism which accompanies periods of political exhaustion\, is there anything to be salvaged from among the debris? Can we not at least reclaim a sense of what Fredric Jameson has called “anti-anti-Utopianism” by looking at those failures from a global perspective? While taking stock of the pessimism which permeates Wynter’s and Antoni’s works\, I contend that the panorama is not quite so despairing as it would seem\, and that the transnational texture of their narratives may function as an antidote to the bankruptcy of their utopian blueprints.
