DESCRIPTION:Le vendredi 13 septembre à 18h\, Poetry Beyond devait accueillir le poète états-unien Kwame Dawes\, récemment élu poète lauréat de Jamaïque. Dawes\, qui est l’auteur de nombreux recueils de poésie dont Wheels (2011)\, City of Bones: A Testament (2017) et Nebraska (2019)\, de plusieurs anthologies de poésie haïtienne et caribéenne\, et d’un essai sur la poésie de Bob Marley\, Bob Marley: Lyrical Genius (2007)\, devait lire des poèmes issus de son tout dernier recueil\, Sturge Town (Peepal Tree\, 2023) et répondre aux questions du public. \nCette lecture est malheureusement annulée: un cas de force majeure oblige notre invité à renoncer à son voyage à Paris. DESCRIPTION:Dans le cadre du Cycle interdisciplinaire « Du livre au mur ! La poésie exposée (musées\, galeries\, bibliothèques) »\, nous aurons le plaisir d’écouteer Elise Angioi (Paris 8 Vincennes Saint Denis) pour une conférence consacrée aux installations-poèmes de Caroline Bergvall (cf abstract et bio ci-dessous). Lieu à confirmer. \n« Les installations-poèmes plurilingues de Caroline Bergvall : pour une esthétique participative » \nL’œuvre poétique de Caroline Bergvall\, artiste franco-norvégienne contemporaine\, travaille les enjeux de la rencontre entre les langues par des gestes d’écriture qui se déploient dans divers formes et lieux d’art\, en particulier des installations dans des galeries et des musées. C’est notamment le cas de quatre installations-poèmes : « Say: “Parsley” »\, une installation sur le schibboleth (Exeter Maritime Museum en 2001\, Museum of Contemporary Arts d’Anvers en 2008\, et Arnolfini Gallery Bristol en 2010)\, « Via »\, une mise en scène de la traduction à travers le temps à partir du premier tercet de l’Inferno de Dante (à la Fundacio Tapies de Barcelone en 2004)\, « Middling English »\, qui rassemble des réécritures de Chaucer (John Hansard Gallery à Londres en 2010)\, et « Crop »\, qui questionne la possibilité du passage de frontières selon les corps (John Hansard Gallery à Londres en 2010\, et John Hansard Gallery à Southampton en 2018). Les deux premiers ont été publiés sous forme de texte dans Fig (2005)\, et les deux derniers figurent notamment dans le recueil Meddle English (2011). Dans toutes ces installations\, Bergvall se propose et nous propose d’explorer la matérialité des langues de manière multimodale et multisensorielle. Elle fait figurer le texte des poèmes de manière visuelle\, par exemple avec des « broadsides » entremêlés (« Middling »)\, la projection de poèmes et mots (« Say: “Parsley” »)\, ou des lettres collées au mur\, donnant diverses textures aux langues et au texte (« Crop »). Dans « Say: “Parsley” » et « Middling English » il était possible de s’emparer de bout de textes donnés sous la forme de pins et de « broadsides » respectivement. Elle met en outre en place des dispositifs sonores qui reprennent le texte des poèmes que l’on écoute avec ou sans casque. En manifestant simultanément ces facettes sensorielles — visuelle\, auditive\, tactile\, voire proprioceptive — du langage\, quelles visions des langues apparaissent et quelles relations entre elles sont-elles nouées ? Plus encore\, comment les lecteur-ice-s devenus auditeur-ice-s et visiteur-se-e\, voire acteur-ice-s\, par les dispositifs mis en place par Bergvall participent-iels à ces relations ? Car\, en effet\, l’un des enjeux de ces installations-poèmes est pour Bergvall de créer des modes d’adresse poétique renouvelés (Contzen et Wolf « Interview with C. Bergvall » 2023). Nous examinerons ainsi comment la configuration multimodale et multisensorielle des installations-poèmes dénaturalise les contours des langues pour mieux les mettre en relation. Ces effets sont exacerbés par l’espace-temps de l’expérience de visite\, dont les durées variables et les effets d’itération dans les divers espaces nous resituent et nous font nous resituer par rapport aux langues. Ainsi\, il s’agira de voir comment les lecteur-ice-s / visiteur-se-s deviennent impliqué-e-s dans l’esthétique et l’éthique relationnelle des installations-poèmes de Bergvall (Edmond Make it the Same 2019). \nElise Angioi est actuellement en doctorat à l’Université Paris 8 Vincennes Saint-Denis au sein de l’unité de recherche TransCrit. Sa thèse porte sur les rapports entre temporalités et plurilinguisme dans des poésies contemporaines expérimentales de la sphère nord-américaine\, chez Caroline Bergvall\, Natalie Diaz\, LaTasha Diggs\, Erín Moure\, et NourbeSe Philip. \n

DESCRIPTION:Attention\, changement de jour: La première séance à lieu le mardi 8 octobre de 18 h 00 à 19 h 30 à la Bibliothèque de l’UFR d’études anglophones\, escalier G\, Sorbonne\, (entrée par le 17 rue de La Sorbonne). Elle est consacrée à l’intervention d’Armel Dubois-Nayt sur « Marie Stuart dans la Querelle des femmes (XVIe-XVIIIe siècles)».\nProposition: Marie Stuart a fait l’objet de nombreux débats chez les historiens et historiennes dès le XVIe siècle. Ces débats s’expliquent en partie par les divergences de point de vue selon la religion ou l’identité nationale des auteurs et autrices. Leurs biais de genre\, c’est-à-dire la manière dont ils pensaient la différence des sexes\, sont\, en revanche\, rarement pris en compte. Pourtant\, ils sont déterminants dans la reconstruction du personnage de la reine d’Écosse et de son histoire. L’objet de cette communication sera de montrer comment les discours sur la différence/inégalité des sexes\, qui forment le genre de la querelle\, facilitent notre compréhension\, sinon de cette reine et de ses actions\, du moins de leurs mises en récit. Elle s’arrêtera\, pour ce faire\, sur deux nœuds spécifiques de la querelle : le droit des femmes à ceindre la couronne et leur accès à la culture. La première de ces controverses fut réouverte dans la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle pour la reine d’Écosse\, la seconde par elle-même. Cette communication retracera donc le chemin parcouru par Marie Stuart\, de mécène à participante au débat\, en passant par le statut d’illustre exemple. Elle montrera que la postérité de Marie Stuart s’est aussi largement écrite au sein de cette gigantesque controverse\, en France et dans les Îles Britanniques\, du milieu du XVIe siècle à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

DESCRIPTION:10 octobre 2024: Estelle Zhong-Mengual (Beaux-Arts)\, « Styles d’attention pour le vivant : peinture et histoire naturelle en Angleterre et aux États-Unis au XIXème siècle »\nRésumé: À travers une excursion dans la peinture de paysage états-unienne et les écrits de femmes naturalistes du XIXème siècle\, l’historienne de l’art Estelle Zhong Mengual propose d’interroger ces œuvres à l’aune du style d’attention au monde vivant qui y est déployé : quelles sont les relations\, dispositions\, attitudes déployées à l’égard des plantes\, des animaux non humains et des milieux\, rendues sensibles grâce au travail pictural et littéraire ? Dans quelle mesure ce style d’attention fait-il effraction du style d’attention au vivant caractéristique de la modernité dont nous héritons\, qui peine à reconnaître l’altérité des formes de vie autres qu’humaines et leur capacité à revêtir des significations autonomes des projections
 
Estelle Zhong Mengual est historienne de l’art. Normalienne et docteure\, elle a enseigné pendant six ans dans le Master Art et Politique (SPEAP) créé par Bruno Latour à Sciences Po\, et dirige la chaire « Habiter le paysage » aux Beaux-Arts de Paris. Ses recherches portent sur les relations que l’art\, passé et présent\, entretient avec le monde vivant. Elle est l’auteure de nombreux livres\, dont Apprendre à voir. Le point de vue du vivant (Actes Sud\, 2021)\, Peindre au corps à corps. Les fleurs et Georgia O’Keeffe (Actes Sud\, 2022). En 2023\, elle crée pour le Louvre\, avec le chorégraphe Jérôme Bel\, Danses non humaines\, un spectacle qui propose de faire l’expérience des relations que les chorégraphes ont créées avec le monde vivant.

DESCRIPTION:For the conference website\, click here \nConference Outline \nFrance figures prominently in Jewett’s life and writing: she claimed French (Huguenot) descendance through her paternal grandmother; she knew French well and integrated French language\, painting\, and literature in her work; she was a frequent visitor to France; she was translated into French by Th. Bentzon (Mme Blanc) and was published in La Revue des Deux Mondes; she maintained contact with the Acadians\, or the “Québecois”\, of Maine. More particularly to the current moment\, the worldwide canonization of Jewett and her enduring importance is perhaps nowhere better epitomized than in her work’s inclusion in France’s prestigious agrégation examinations: in 2021-2023 all French universities were required to teach at least one class on Jewett. \nBut these two—biographical and strictly academic—are not the only reasons to situate the first ever conference dedicated to Jewett’s work in France. By dislocating Jewett from Maine and New England\, to which she is all too often bound\, we aim to dislocate the study of American literary regionalism—as well as the concept of “the region” in general—from its narrow territorial framework and emphasize its transatlantic and global dimensions. We find this move to be strategically important on at least two levels: first\, by widening Jewett’s territorial scope\, we necessarily widen the span of her work’s reception\, possibly encouraging the translation of her prose and poetry into other languages\, as well as the recognition and translation of other American regionalist authors from Jewett’s period and circle. Secondly\, by dislocating the concept of “the region”—via regionalist literature—we aim to rearticulate the relationship between the local and the global to show that no single region can any longer be understood as an isolated unit but rather must be understood as a site where the local and global inextricably meet\, alerting us to the new reality of climate change and the wholesale revaluation of all values and concepts that this phenomenon elicits. Unhinging Jewett from New England and transplanting her to another locale opens the way for internationalizing her work and allowing it to mobilize the themes so urgently in front of us in the Anthropocene. \nIn 2024\, “Sarah Orne Jewett Unbound” aims to initiate a new wave of regionalist Jewett scholarship that will both celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the groundbreaking volume New Essays on The Country of the Pointed Firs and respond to it by offering new critical avenues for a twenty-first century Jewett. To that end\, we invite proposals that bring Jewett’s regionalism into conversation with current topics in literary humanities\, focused but not limited to: \n–       Blue Humanities: The Atlantic ocean links Jewett’s Maine seascapes with European and Caribbean spaces\, repositioning her regionalism as a truly transcontinental formation concerned with plantation slavery\, colonial trade\, and the transplantation of invasive biota to imperial spaces.\n–       Environmentalism and Post-Humanism: Environmental exploitation in Jewett’s work is linked with New England’s logging\, shipping\, fishing\, and whaling industries revealing a rarely explored thematic cluster of her writing’s proto-environmentalism that extends to the urgent questions of the entanglement of human and non-human worlds\, and the rearticulation of human identity as trans- and/or post-human.\n–       Critical Race and Indigenous Studies: Recent scholarship has uncovered Jewett’s interest in deep time geology and indigenous cultures which links Jewett regionalist temporality with pre-contact eras and reveals its neglected focus on the violence against\, and dispossession of\, native civilizations.\n–       LGBTQ and Post-Gender Concerns: Jewett’s “Boston marriage” with Annie Field was the topic of the first two scholarly waves but its link with other gender and sexual identities\, as well as with the concerns of queer intimacies not restricted to heteronormative practices\, has not been sufficiently explored.\n–       The Future of the Jewett Archive: While Jewett’s work is immense\, critics\, students\, and teachers tend to focus on a handful of them. The conference will seek to explore Jewett’s rarely considered and unpublished stories\, poetry\, and vast correspondence\, as well as the ways in which these texts will be transcribed\, digitized\, and archived. \nThe conference will be the inaugurating event for the institution of the first Sarah Orne Jewett Society\, the most reliable avenue to preserve an author’s legacy. It will feature a show-case and Q&A session with the Maine Women Writers Collection about the practical dimensions of archival work as well as the future of regionalist research.

DESCRIPTION:L’histoire littéraire occupe une place centrale dans les théories de la surveillance\, qui est\, hélas\, trop peu analysée au profit d’autres formes plus spectaculaires\, en apparence\, de l’« art surveillanciel » (cinéma\, séries\, installations ou performances artistiques contemporaines). Faut-il\, néanmoins\, rappeler le rôle essentiel des imaginaires littéraires dans l’édification du champ des surveillance studies ? De Mille neuf cent quatre-vingt-quatre à La Servante écarlate\, pour prendre des jalons connus\, il est même possible de considérer que la réflexivité sur les dispositifs de surveillance et leur puissance biopolitique se fait dans et par la spéculation littéraire. Il serait même utile\, selon nous\, de remonter à des sources plus anciennes pour comprendre les enjeux les plus actuels en termes de vision de monde et de régime de représentation. Avant d’être une thématique\, la « transparence » constitue un pivot dans la littérature du 18ème siècle en ce qu’elle réfléchit les conditions de transitivité ou d’intransitivité de la fiction et\, au-delà\, du langage. Les débats méta-poétiques sur la tentation « panoptique » de la narration rejoignent l’ère du soupçon qui va gagner la fin du 19ème siècle puis tout le 20ème siècle sur la fonction référentielle du récit. De sorte que notre hypothèse épistémologique considère que la littérature n’est pas seulement unauxiliaire fictionnel pour la théorie de la surveillance\, mais qu’elle en est le moteur intime\, dans la mesure où elle est le lieu où s’élabore une critique en acte des injonctions modernes à la toute-visibilité. \nOlivier Aïm est maître de conférences en sciences de l’information et de la communication à Sorbonne Université (Celsa). Ses recherches portent sur les dispositifs médiatiques et les pratiques culturelles. Depuis une quinzaine d’années\, il s’est spécialisé sur les questions de surveillance et a publié en 2020 Les théories de la surveillance. Du panopticon aux Surveillance Studies chez Armand Colin. Depuis\, il a coordonné plusieurs numéros de revues et rédigé plusieurs articles consacrés aux enjeux surveillanciels liés aux nouvelles pratiques médiatiques : surveillabilité\, performances d’écran et contre-surveillance.

DESCRIPTION:Dans le cadre du séminaire « Keywords » organisé par Jagna Oltarzewska (Axe PACT)\, Sara Thornton (Université Paris Cité) donnera une conférence le mardi 26 novembre à 17:30h à la Maison de la Recherche rue Serpente (salle 002).  \nSa communication portera sur le mot-clé : « Coal » et aura pour titre : \n« Coal : fossil energy as a structure of feeling » \nThe present seminar asks us to consider the heuristic force of our chosen keyword within a chosen field and to reflect on its broader social\, cultural and political resonances. Reading Victorian and more broadly nineteenth-century literature brings one into contact with the material world\, matter of all sorts and particularly with woven fabric\, paper\, wood\, iron and coal. Coal was the primary substance which created the energy for driving pistons and allowed the delocalization of manufacture\, moving it away from communities based around water and water-driven mills to any location where a workforce could be mustered. Coal dictated a certain type of productivity which fueled industry and the expansion of Empire as well as the desire for revolution and travel. Coal and its dust inhabit the pages of the Victorian novel (and indeed particles of soot have been found in the very paper used to make serial fiction). Soot informs our vision of London or the British industrial north from Blake’s 1794 chimney sweep to the grime of the Dickensian novel to Conan Doyle’s turn-of-the-century blackened streets. It was also the subject of illustrated industrial series aimed at those who wished to set up in the business of mining coal and iron ore. \nThis paper will take as its cue the inaugural paper given by Catherine Bernard\, which explored the tensions between ‘common’\, ‘commons’ and ‘community’ and allowed us to see the emergence of a freer interpretation of what might be seen as ‘common’ to all\, that is\, unbound by the restrictions of community. We will ask what form of the ‘common’\, coal allowed\, what alternative points and places of sharing were opened up by it and what new forms of self were able to thrive during its reign. We will explore how coal\, although partly a destroyer of the water-based ‘flowing commons’ (Andreas Malm\, 2016) and of the rural communities which formed around water\, was also the bringer of an alternative episteme and imaginary.  Williams does not mention coal in his Keywords\, nor steam\, although many of his entries – ‘Industry’\, ‘Manufacture’\, ‘Exploitation’ among others – gesture at unhealthy practices of extractivism and a need to temper the unbridled productivity allowed by fossil fuel (1983). Paradoxically\, then (for this is not an apology for coal energy – after all we are still breathing the particles of soot produced when Dickens was alive)\, fossil fuel perhaps offered the possibility of new mental spaces\, the chance to be part of a moving ‘multitude’ with ‘singularities within the common’ (Hardt and Negri\, 2004)\, as well as ‘multiple transmissions’ (Williams\, 1974) and modes of projection beyond the community\, the village and the nation state. \n  \nSara Thornton is Professor of English at Université Paris Cité and a member of the Anglophone studies research laboratory\, LARCA. She has written on the way the literary text absorbs and showcases socio-economic and environmental concerns suggesting new forms of urban subjectivity (Advertising\, Subjectivity and the nineteenth-century novel: Dickens\, Balzac and the Language of the Walls\, Palgrave\, 2009) and Dickens and the Virtual City:  Urban Perception and the Production of Social Space with Estelle Murail\, Palgrave\, 2017). She has also published on animal subjectivity (Comforting Creatures : Changing Visions of Animal Otherness in the Victorian Period\, with Laurence Roussillon-Constanty\, Cahiers victoriens\, 2018) and more recently on George Eliot (‘Eliot’s Mitwelt: Productive Environments in The Mill on the Floss and Middlemarch‘\, 2021)\, on decolonial receptions of Enid Blyton (‘Blyton’s ghosts: Childhood receptions in India and Britain’\, Routledge\, 2022 with Tanvi Chowdhary)\, and climate crisis and decoloniality in Dickens (19\, 2025). Her present research considers coal energy and its effect on the representation of Victorian bodies and on the texture of nineteenth-century writing. She gave a paper “Becoming Mineral: Bodies and Extractivism from Dickens to Conrad” at the conference « Energy\, Empire and Extractivism in the Age of Conrad » (2024). \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Le 16 janvier 2025 à 17h\, sur le Campus des Cordeliers (Salle des Thèses) nous aurons la chance d’accueillir Abigail Lang (Paris Cité\, LARCA)\, qui parlera de l’exposition « Adventures in Poetry » dont elle a été commissaire au Centre international de la poésie de Marseille de janvier à avril 2024\, et Mica Gherghescu (Centre Pompidou/ Bibliothèque Kandinsky) qui présentera les expositions qu’elle a coordonnées (d’Aimé Césaire à Ghérasim Luca\, de Bernard Heidsieck à la poésie concrète) au Musée national d’art moderne (voir les résumés ci-dessous). \nSéance ouverte aux étudiant·e·s de Master et doctorat ainsi qu’aux chercheur·euses en littérature et histoire de l’art. \n  \n\nAbigail Lang (Paris Cité / LARCA)\, « Adventures in Poetry : Exposer la collection de poésie américaine du cipM »\n\nComment exposer une collection d’ouvrages ? Comment restituer la vitalité de la poésie américaine des années 1950-1980 ? Comment négocier un récit ? Ce sont là les principales questions que j’ai eues à résoudre lorsque j’ai accepté l’invitation du centre international de poésie Marseille (cipM) à mettre en valeur sa collection de livres de poésie américaine. Dans ma présentation\, je reviendrai sur les solutions mises en œuvre dans l’exposition Adventures in Poetry\, qui s’est tenue du 20 janvier au 27 avril 2024. \nAbigail Lang est maîtresse de conférences HDR en littérature américaine à Université Paris Cité. Elle est l’autrice de La conversation transatlantique. Les échanges franco-américains en poésie depuis 1968 (2021).

DESCRIPTION:6 février 2025: Michael Jonik (Sussex)\, “Instinctive Faculties”:  Impulse\, Sensation and Intuition in Benjamin Rush’s Lectures on the Mind \n\nAbstract: Benjamin Rush (1746-1813)\, perhaps best known as a Philadelphia physician\, psychiatrist and statesman\, develops an idiosyncratic psychology based on how physical causes affect the mental faculties. In this paper\, I situate Rush’s emergent science of the mind within the early US Republic’s philosophical community and its broader milieu of transatlantic thinkers: Franklin and Jefferson\, David Hartley\, and Joseph Priestley\, Thomas Reid and Scottish Common Sense Philosophy\, or Erasmus Darwin\, but also to lesser known figures such as Thomas Cooper or Benjamin Smith Barton\, and French physicians such as François-Joseph-Victor Broussais and Xavier Bichat.  My focus\, however\, is on how Rush modifies associationist psychology (metaphysically closest to Hartley and Priestley) to understand what he calls the “instinctive faculties” of impulse\, sensation and intuition in terms of both human and animal psychologies. I will explore this primarily in terms of his Lectures on the Mind\, but also in his Three Lectures Upon Animal Life and Diseases of the Mind. I will historically reconstruct how Rush’s philosophy of medicine\, psychiatry\, and the mind responded to Scottish Common Sense philosophy (including exchanges with figures at the University of Edinburgh)\, and use this reconstruction as a basis for specific conceptual interventions around\, for example\, questions of instinct and sensation. This research will be based on archival work at the American Philosophical Society in relation to Rush’s place in medical history; Smith Barton’s work on animal cognition; material on Darwin\, Priestley and Wister; and the Native American and Indigenous Collections.\n\n

Her research project\, entitled “Women Networks and Transcendentalist Utopias: Health\, Gender\, and Reform” (TransUTOPIA)\, aims to uncover the feminist subculture that existed within Transcendentalist utopias (Brook Farm and the Fruitlands). More broadly\, Alice specializes in nineteenth-century American literature\, with a focus on feminist women’s writing. She has taught American Literature at the University of Edinburgh and the University of Sussex\, where she worked as Lecturer in American Studies and English. She is the Associate Editor of The Concord Saunterer: A Journal of Thoreau Studies and the Associate Editor of Margaret Fuller\, Periodical and Other Writings\, The Edinburgh Edition of the Collected Writings of Margaret Fuller. In 2022\, her article “Transcendentalist Women in Conversation: Margaret Fuller\, Sophia Ripley\, and ‘Woman’” appeared in Transatlantica: American Studies Journal. Microcosmic poetics\, I suggest\, are a key mode of literary engagement with the Anthropocene\, which allow characters and readers to encounter the damaged planet they inhabit. These miniature Earths can be read as allegorical figures\, which enable response-ability across scales. Yet the encounters mediated by these entities are also material and sensual events\, where the human subject not only faces\, but also touches the earth\, iron\, stone and plastic that make up the Earth. This talk asks what new forms of ecological awareness are enabled by such microcosmic matter\, in contemporary novels by N. K. Jemisin\, Ali Smith\, Jeanette Winterson\, A. S. Byatt and Karen Tei Yamashita. Drawing on the scale-critical strand of environmental humanities\, and particularly the concepts proposed by Timothy Clark\, Bruno Latour and Peter Sloterdijk\, I read these figures as sites of ethical demands\, epistemic challenges\, and ontological trouble. \nLiliane Campos is a Lecturer in English and Theatre Studies at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University and a Fellow of the Institut Universitaire de France. Her research explores the role of science in theatre and literature. She recently edited Life\, Re-Scaled: The Biological Imagination in Twenty-First-Century Literature and Performance (Open Book Publishers\, 2022\, open acess) with Pierre-Louis Patoine.
