Malgré la suppression du purgatoire\, des prières pour les défunt·es et de l’intercession des saint·es\, ainsi que le changement de statut des fantômes et des spectres dont on prétend désormais qu’ils ou elles ne sont que de viles illusions fabriquées par le diable\, on continue néanmoins de dialoguer avec les mort·es. Le développement du théâtre professionnel permet à cette conversation d’avoir notamment lieu sur la scène. Celle-ci offre un espace fictionnel de substitution aux rites abolis\, mais aussi un espace de médiation ambiguë et de réflexion critique portant non seulement sur les pratiques dans le domaine mais touchant aussi à des questions religieuses\, politiques et sociales plus vastes. Le Hamlet de Shakespeare en constitue un exemple frappant et bien connu\, mais quantité d’autres pièces de la période élisabéthaine et jacobéenne peuvent être invoquées. Se développe également au cours des XVIe\, XVIIe et XVIIe siècles\, dans les Îles britanniques\, comme ailleurs en Europe\, un goût de plus en plus prononcé pour la forme du Dialogue avec les mort·es\, reprise à Lucien de Samosate\, dont les œuvres sont popularisées en particulier par la traduction latine qu’en donnent Érasme et Sir Thomas More. Pendant comique et grinçant du dialogue socratique\, voire contre-dialogue socratique\, le Dialogue avec les mort·es participe des instruments pédagogiques privilégiés des méthodes humanistes et sceptiques\, qui cherchent à instruire tout en déconstruisant\, par la satire et le rire\, illusions et croyances superstitieuses – celles-là même qui empêchent l’accès au savoir et permettent l’exercice de différentes formes de pouvoir abusif. Considérée comme un texte dangereux\, conduisant potentiellement à l’athéisme\, la traduction de Lucien par Érasme et More est mise à l’index par l’Église dans les années 1590.

DESCRIPTION:Co-organisé par les laboratoires EMMA (Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry) et VALE (Sorbonne Université) \nSoixante ans après la première de Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead au Old Vic Theatre à Londres (1967) et un peu plus d’un an après la mort de Sir Tom Stoppard\, le 29 novembre 2025\, ce colloque international propose de rendre hommage à l’un des dramaturges qui a le plus notoirement marqué le théâtre anglais des XXe et XXIe siècles. \nDepuis Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead jusqu’à Leopoldstadt qui s’est jouée dans le West End en 2020 puis à Broadway\, l’œuvre de Stoppard n’a cessé de démontrer sa grande vitalité. Son théâtre se caractérise par un renouvellement constant : en témoignent des œuvres aussi variées que The Real Inspector Hound (1968)\, parodie du genre policier\, Jumpers (1972)\, farce philosophique\, Dogg’s Hamlet\, Cahoot’s Macbeth (1979)\, sur le mode des jeux de langage à la manière de Wittgenstein\, Arcadia (1993)\, intrigue policière et scientifique\, ou encore sa grande fresque épique The Coast of Utopia (2002)\, pour ne citer que quelques exemples. \nCe colloque offrira une vision rétrospective de son œuvre et des problématiques qui la traversent et sera également l’occasion de s’interroger sur la place de l’œuvre de Stoppard dans le paysage théâtral anglais contemporain de ces dernières décennies. His theatre is characterised by constant reinvention\, as evidenced by such diverse works as The Real Inspector Hound (1968)\, a parody of the detective genre; Jumpers(1972)\, a philosophical farce; Dogg’s Hamlet\, Cahoot’s Macbeth (1979)\, with its Wittgensteinian language games; Arcadia (1993)\, which combines scientific inquiry with detective fiction; and the epic trilogy The Coast of Utopia (2002)\, to name but a few examples. \nThis conference will offer a retrospective overview of Stoppard’s work and the major themes that run through it\, while also examining its place within the landscape of contemporary British theatre over recent decades. Was Stoppard’s theatre aligned with—or at odds with—movements such as new writing and postdramatic theatre\, which place innovation\, radicalism\, and formal experimentation at the heart of their practice? DESCRIPTION:« Écritures en présence ? Le festival Sturmfrei\, ou quand le littéraire s’écrit\, se lit et se vit collectivement » \nEcritures en présence ? Ou quand le littéraire s’écrit\, se lit et se vit collectivement\, au-delà des géographies connues du livre comme filière\, contribuant à son renouvellement par l’oralité et sa proximité avec l’énergie festive et l’esquisse de nouvelles territorialités de la poésie et de la performance. Cette communication s’adosse à une pratique d’auteur\, pour qui la rencontre entre littérature\, scènes et musiques expérimentales est intuitive\, et celle de co-fondateur et co-programmateur du festival Sturmfrei\, aventure née en 2021 pour créer une scène à des écritures bouillonnantes\, rétives aux étiquettes\, issues des marges esthétiques comme politiques. Il est autant un exercice d’auto-réflexivité sur quatre années d’expérimentation au sein du festival Sturmfrei qu’un plaidoyer pour la juste reconnaissance de la place des écritures en présence dans le champ littérature et celui\, plus large\, des écritures contemporaines.\n\nBIO\n\n\nArnaud Idelon est auteur\, performeur et programmateur. Il est l’auteur de fictions et d’essais qu’il donne vie à travers des revues\, des objets graphiques\, des recueils de poésie\, des performances\, des films et des installations sonores. Il enseigne à l’École des arts de l’Université Paris 1 – Panthéon-Sorbonne en tant que directeur du master « Sciences et techniques de l’exposition »\, et est cofondateur et programmateur du lieu culturel Le Sample (Bagnolet)\, ainsi que de Sturmfrei\, un festival de poésie et de performances en région parisienne. Il a publié l’essai « Boum Boum. Politiques du dancefloor » en janvier 2025 aux Éditions Divergences. Tiré à 12 000 exemplaires\, cet essai a reçu un accueil critique très favorable\, avec une centaine de mentions dans la presse (France Culture\, France Inter\, Libération\, Le Monde\, Médiapart\, l’Obs\, Blast\, etc.). Il collabore avec de nombreuses publications nationales françaises (AOC Média\, Observatoire des Politiques Culturelles\, Mouvement\, etc.) sur les arts de la scène\, les festivals et les arts littéraires\, et est membre de l’AICA (Association internationale des critiques d’art). En 2025\, le Centre Pompidou lui a donné carte blanche pour explorer l’imagerie visuelle des fêtes contemporaines au Grand Palais.

DESCRIPTION:“Quiet Desperation”: Pessimism in Emerson and Thoreau  \n12-13 March 2027 \n\n\nUniversity of Łódź  \nFaculty of Philology  \n\nSorbonne Université \nResearch Unit VALE \n\nOnline conference \nCall for Papers  \n“God help the poor fellow who squares his life according to this\,” wrote Melville in the margin of his copy of Emerson’s essay “Prudence.” Since then\, Emerson has often been accused of excessive optimism and an incomprehension of evil. Today\, in a world marked by the recent pandemic\, the devastation of wars\, climate catastrophe\, and global political instability\, are Emerson and Thoreau obsolete in their unshaken faith in the powers of the individual\, or do they continue to be relevant? As organizers of this conference\, we follow in the footsteps of Stanley Cavell\, who believed that Emerson’s philosophy consisted not in optimism\, but in a struggle against despair. In Cavell’s reading\, what Emerson called “silent melancholy” and what Thoreau referred to as “quiet desperation” was the main context of American Romanticism (Cavell 130). Our purpose\, among others\, is therefore to question the well-worn dichotomy of the optimistic ‘Transcendentalists’ and the ‘Dark Romantics’. \nRecent scholarly voices suggest that both authors can be fruitfully studied with reference to contemporary issues. Among the more philosophically inclined critics\, Cavell’s heritage has been continued by scholars interested in Emerson as a proto-pragmatist (e.g. Robinson 1993; Levin 1999). Another important issue has been literary form and its interconnection with rhetorical purpose (e.g. Voelz 2010). However\, the majority of scholarly books devoted to Emerson and Thoreau over the last two decades have dealt with political issues (e.g. Levine and Malachuk 2014; Case et al.\, 2021). Pessimist themes have been addressed by Arsić (2016)\, as well as by a number of biographically-oriented studies\, most notably Hanlon (2017) and Richardson (2023). Our conference inscribes itself into both trends\, assessing the two writers’ ongoing relevance and focusing on the ‘dark’ themes in their writing. \nThe Department of North American Literature and Culture at the University of Łódź\, Poland\, and the Research Unit VALE at Sorbonne Université\, France\, cordially invite scholars working across various disciplines to submit paper and panel proposals which consider the theme of pessimism in the field of Emerson and/or Thoreau studies. Interdisciplinary perspectives are certainly encouraged; we also welcome abstract submissions from postgraduate students. \nFollowing the success of our 2022 digital conference “Whales and Veils: Obsessions in Melville and Hawthorne” and in an effort to minimize the conference’s carbon footprint while facilitating international participation\, we have decided to hold the event online. He is the author of two monographs\, Transcendental Resistance: The New Americanists and Emerson’s Challenge (University Press of New England\, 2010) and Poetics of Insecurity: American Fiction and the Uses of Threat (Cambridge University Press\, 2018). Among his articles on the Transcendentalists is the essay “Democracy\,” included in The New Cambridge Companion to Ralph Waldo Emerson (2026). He is the Director of the interdisciplinary PhD program “Aesthetics of Democracy\,” funded by the German Research Foundation\, and the Founding Co-Director of “Democratic Vistas: Reflections on the Atlantic World\,” a research collective at Frankfurt’s Institute for Advanced Studies. In the summer term 2026\, he will be Harris Distinguished Visiting Professor at Dartmouth College\, New Hampshire. Currently he is completing a monograph on the Aesthetics of Populism. \nAndrew McMurry is a Professor of English Language and Literature at the University of Waterloo\, where he teaches discourse analysis\, rhetoric\, and environmental communication. He has published widely on American literature\, ecocriticism\, and political rhetoric. His books are Environmental Renaissance: Emerson\, Thoreau and the System of Nature and Entertaining Futility: Despair and Hope in the Time of Climate Change. His current project\, Our Dumb Necropolis; and Other Monstrations\, reads ecocide and end-times fascism through the lens of horror\, a genre well-equipped to explore our planet-devouring death cult.
