DESCRIPTION:« T.S.E. : Transition\, Subversion\, Élection poétiques » \nJournées d’étude sur T.S. Eliot \n26-27 janvier 2024 \nENS rue d’Ulm \nLe jeu sur les initiales du poète Thomas Stearns Eliot permet de synthétiser l’approche qui sera celle des différent-es intervenant-es de ces deux journées d’étude. Américain puis Britannique\, protestant puis anglican\, moderniste puis classique\, Eliot parcourt au fil de sa vie plusieurs trajectoires de transition\, voire de conversion\, qui font de lui un poète occidental\, représentant d’un cosmopolitisme masculin et blanc qui a très longtemps défini le canon poétique anglo-saxon de la première moitié du 20e siècle. Par son utilisation elliptique et souvent cryptique des citations et de l’intertexualité\, il a produit une critique subversive de la civilisation et de la modernité telles qu’elles se manifestent dans ces mêmes années\, déplorant la décadence généralisée que\, selon lui\, l’ère industrielle a précipitée notamment par la guerre et ses innovations technologiques mortelles et amorales. Seul remède à cette condition humaine dégradée\, la redéfinition du génie poétique\, attribut d’un nombre réduit d’élus\, ouvre la voie hypothétique et jamais réalisée dans le texte des poèmes d’une rédemption finale. \nIl s’agira donc plus globalement de remettre Eliot en perspective dans le cadre des débats qui ont\, ces dernières années\, entouré son œuvre et\, par delà la révolution esthétique qu’elle a occasionnée\, de réexaminer la portance politique problématique de ses prises de position poétiques. Questions de genre et misogynie\, conservatisme extrême et tentation fasciste\, élitisme social et racial et antisémitisme\, autant de sujets dérangeants et cruciaux que les poèmes d’Eliot remettent au centre de l’analyse textuelle et dont ils démontrent la finalité éthique nécessaire. DESCRIPTION:Mina Loy and Her Networks \nParis – 8-9 September 2023  \nSorbonne Université & Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle \nOrganised by Diane Drouin (Sorbonne Université) and Yasna Bozhkova (Sorbonne-Nouvelle)\, with funding from Sorbonne Université (Laboratoire VALE\, ED IV\, Fonds d’Intervention pour la Recherche)\, Université Sorbonne-Nouvelle (Laboratoire PRISMES) and the Société d’études modernistes (SEM). \nKeynote speakers:  \nSusan Rosenbaum\, University of Georgia \nLaura Scuriatti\, Bard College Berlin \nFollowing on the heels of the recent modernist celebrations of 1922\, 2023 marks the centenary of the publication of Mina Loy’s first collection of poems Lunar Baedecker\, published in Paris by Robert McAlmon in his Contact collection. Loy’s work is now more topical than ever\, and we are witnessing an apex in Loy scholarship\, with the recent publication of Mary Ann Caws’ new biography\, Mina Loy: Apology of Genius (Reaktion Books\, 2022)\, and the long-awaited exhibition of her artworks\, Strangeness is Inevitable\, organized at Bowdoin College in the US (April 6–September 17\, 2023)\, marking the apogee of ten years of steadily growing scholarly interest in Loy’s œuvre. \nHowever\, despite her growing global reputation and increasing recognition in the past decades\, Loy’s work still remains more marginal in France than in the English-speaking world. This is somewhat paradoxical given that it was in France that Loy spent some of her most important years\, first as an art student from 1900 to 1907 and then in the 1920s and the early 1930s. DESCRIPTION:Les « text-paintings » de Glenn Ligon : la poésie entre lisibilité et illisibilité \nAntonia Rigaud (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle) \nCette conférence sera l’occasion de présenter le travail de Glenn Ligon\, artiste afro-américain contemporain né en 1960 et dont l’œuvre est déjà largement inscrite dans le canon de l’art expérimental états-unien. Artiste visuel avant tout\, Ligon utilise l’écriture comme matériau visuel : il commence en effet au début des années 1990 à produire des tableaux qui transcrivent au pochoir sur la toile des citations d’écrivains (afro-américains pour l’essentiel\, mais pas seulement). Les citations qui constituent la matière du tableau nous invitent à un travail de déchiffrage\, les lettres se brouillant du fait de la superposition de textes ou de traces noires sur la toile blanche. \nL’artiste s’empare ici de la littérature comme d’un matériau visuel\, travaillant dans une filiation revendiquée avec le travail visuel de Jasper Johns\, et dans le sillage de ce que fit la génération précédente d’artistes conceptuels tels que Carl Andre ou Robert Smithson par exemple\, mais à cette différence près que le propos de l’œuvre se situe bien moins du côté d’une réflexion formelle que d’une invitation à réfléchir à notre rapport au lisible. Ligon engage ses spectateurs dans une réflexion sur l’acte d’écriture mais peut-être plus encore sur celui de la lecture et de l’illisibilité. DESCRIPTION:Pour cette séance de rentrée\, nous vous présenterons le programme 2021-22 \n« Polyglottic Poetry: Deconstructing the Anglosphere » \nImportant certains enjeux des théories décoloniales au cœur de la poétique\, nous vous invitons à vous pencher avec nous sur des poèmes dits « anglophones » pour montrer à quel point ils sont souvent\, peut-être même toujours\, traversés par d’autres langues (le vietnamien chez Ocean Vuong\, l’espagnol chez Tracy K. Smith\, les noms issus de l’Algonquin chez Whitman\, les langues romanes chez T.S. Eliot et Wallace Stevens\, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns) et faire ainsi éclater le mythe idéologiquement suspect de « l’Anglosphère ». \nOù et comment ces langues « autres » que l’anglais affectent-elles la syntaxe et le lexique\, affleurant jusque dans les sonorités du poème dit « anglophone » ? Quelles combinaisons et mélanges s’y jouent\, quelle créolisation\, pour qui et pour quoi ? DESCRIPTION:Ann Lauterbach (Ruth and David Schwab II Professor of Languages and Literature\, Bard College) \n« TimeWatching Itself : Narrativity and the Ordinary Sublime in John Ashbery’s Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror. » \n\n\nAnn Lauterbach was born and grew up in Manhattan\, where she studied painting at the High School of Music and Art. She received her BA (English) from the University of Wisconsin (Madison) and went on to graduate work at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. She lived in London for seven years\, working as an editor\, teacher\, and curator of literary events at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. Her early poems were published in England. Returning to New York in 1974\, Lauterbach worked in art galleries and began to publish poetry and art criticism. She has taught in the Writing programs at Brooklyn College\, Columbia\, Iowa\, City College and the Graduate Center of CUNY. From 2007-2011 she was a visiting Core Critic (Sculpture) at the Yale School of Art. In 2006\, she was a Faculty poet for the Summer Literary Seminars in Saint Petersburg\, Russia. In 2013 she was named Distinguished Sherry Poet at the University of Chicago; her work was the subject of a seminar in Paris in 2014. Lauterbach has written on artists Joe Brainard\, Jessica Stockholder\, Taylor Davis\, Kenji Fujita and Cheyney Thompson\, among others\, and for the exhibition “Whole Fragment” at the Sheppard Fine Arts Gallery in Reno\, Nevada. She has published ten collections of poetry\, most recently Spell (Penguin\, 2018). Her prose has been collected in The Night Sky: Writings on the Poetics of Experience (Viking\, 2006); The Given & The Chosen\, and Saint Petersburg Notebook. Lauterbach has received fellowships from the Ingram Merrill Foundation\, the Guggenheim Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Her 2009 collection\, Or to Begin Again\, was nominated for a National Book Award. She has been\, since 1990\, co-Chair of Writing in the interdisciplinary Milton Avery School of the Arts and\, since 1997\, Ruth and David Schwab II Professor of Languages and Literature\, at Bard College. DESCRIPTION:Nous avons le plaisir de vous inviter à la prochaine séance du séminaire VALE qui se déroulera le jeudi 7 février à 17h30 (bibliothèque de l’UFR). \nNous y entendrons Peter Boxall (University of Sussex; Professeur invité\, Sorbonne Université) pour une présentation intitulée : \n“All twined together: Proust\, Joyce\, Beckett”. \nAbstract \nThis paper addresses Beckett’s reception of Joyce and Proust\, in terms of the ways in which all three writers account for the relation between mind and its various biopolitical extensions. Marcel writes\, in Proust’s A la recherche\, that the ‘contradiction of survival and annihilation’ are ‘strangely intertwined within me’\, and this twining is central to Proust’s imaginative apparatus. It is a central aim also of Joyce’s work to give aesthetic expression to the weaving of material forms around the ‘impalpable\, imperishable’ movement of mind\, in order to test the tensile strength of what Joyce calls the ‘strandentwining cable of all flesh’. \nThis paper will explore this twining in Proust and in Joyce\, as it works through Beckett’s writing\, from Dream of Fair to Middling Women to Worstward Ho. The work of Joyce and Proust is ‘all twined together’ in Beckett\, in such a way that it offers his work one of its key binding principles. The commingling of mind and matter in Beckett’s imagination is won from this joint legacy from Proust and Joyce. But to fully respond to this twining in all three writers it is necessary to understand how the forms of attachment that it enacts between mind and material – what Beckett calls in Proust (after Baudelaire) the ‘adequate union of subject and object’ – turns also around a form of dismantlement\, a falling into what Proust calls the ‘abyss of nonbeing’\, and what Beckett calls ‘the blessedness of absence’. Beckett’s work refuses some of the consolatory forms developed in Proust and Joyce\, exhibiting a greater scepticism concerning the power of the artwork to overcome the oppositions that it witnesses between the material and the imaginary; but in so doing it develops the logic of binding that drives Joyce and Proust to its ultimate conclusion. It is in Beckett’s reconceiving of Proust’s and Joyce’s aesthetics of binding and twining that the modernist body – machinic amalgam of mind and matter\, of animate and inanimate – finds its definitive expression.

DESCRIPTION:Third International Conference of the French Society for Modernist Studies (SEM) \n13-14-15-16th June 2018\, Paris Sorbonne University (VALE EA 4085) \n \nKeynote speakers: \nRachel Bowlby (University College London); Douglas Mao (Johns Hopkins University). \nIn a line which seems pre-emptively levelled at Aaron Jaffe’s The Way Things Go exactly one century later\, Richard Aldington wrote in The Egoist that “one of the problems of modern art” is that “to drag smells of petrol\, refrigerators\, ocean greyhounds\, President Wilson and analine [sic] dyes into a work of art will not compensate for lack of talent and technique.” This was December 1914. In the next few decades\, psychoanalysis sought to make sense of the trivial\, thinkers inquired into the status of the mass-produced object\, and the rise of feminist and Labour movements posed the prosaic and essential question of material comforts. Modernist art and literature focused on the mundane\, as emblematized by the everyday object\, which now crystallized our changing relation to the world. The anachronistic frigidaire patent in Ezra Pound’s “Homage to Sextus Propertius\,” ordinariness in William Carlos Williams’s famous “red wheelbarrow\,” defamiliarization in Gertrude Stein’s “Roastbeef” are but a few possible variations on the object\, its importance becoming central to the British neo-empiricists and the American Objectivists. Papers could examine the claim that the poetry and prose\, the visual and performing arts\, and the music of the Modernist era accounted for a shift in object relations with an intensity of observation in proportion with the changes which so profoundly affected the experience of living in industrial times.
