Nous aurons le plaisir d’accueillir Lucy Munro (King’s College London) pour une intervention intitulée «  Marlowe\, Lyly and Children’s Performance in Late Elizabethan London ». \nNous espérons vous y retrouver nombreuses et nombreux\, \nBien amicalement\, \nLine (et pour Alexis) \n« Marlowe\, Lyly and Children’s Performance in Late Elizabethan London » \nThis paper offers a reappraisal of the children’s playing companies of late Elizabethan London. It offers new evidence for their management\, their relationships with the choirs of the Chapel Royal and St Paul’s Cathedral\, and how they acquired and maintained their actors\, exploring the implications of this material for how we understand the performance and publication history of plays such as John Lyly’s Galatea and Christopher Marlowe’s Dido\, Queen of Carthage \nLucy Munro is Professor of Shakespeare and Early Modern Literature at King’s College London. She has published three monographs – Childrenofthe Queen’s Revels: A Jacobean Theatre Repertory (Cambridge UP\, 2005)\, Archaic Style in English Literature\, 1590-1674 (Cambridge UP\, 2013)\, and Shakespeare in the Theatre: The King’s Men (Bloomsbury\, 2020) – and is the editor of plays such as Dekker\, Ford\, and Rowley’s The WitchofEdmonton (Bloomsbury\, 2016)\, Massinger’s The Picture\, in The Routledge AnthologyofEarly Modern Drama\, ed. Jeremy Lopez (Routledge\, 2020)\, and Shirley’s The GentlemanofVenice\, in The WorksofJames Shirley\, gen. ed. Eugene Giddens\, Teresa Grant and Barbara Ravelhofer (Oxford UP\, 2021). She is a contributor to two collaborative research projects that bring together archival research and practice-as-research\, Before Shakespeare and Engendering the Stage. Current projects include an edition of King Henry IV\, Part 1 for the Arden Shakespeare fourth series and a book on the cultural histories of early modern playhouses.

DESCRIPTION:Le nouveau séminaire de PACT « Surveillance Imaginings » accueillera Jean-Michel Ganteau\, Professeur de littérature britannique l’Université de Montpellier autour de son ouvrage The Poetics and Ethics of Attention in Contemporary British Narrative. London: Routledge\, 2023. \nLa séance aura lieu le 11 mars de 17h à 19h à la Maison de la Recherche (Serpente\, salle 001).\n\nThis book uses attention as a prism through which to interrogate the literary text. It starts from analyses of the changes that the mediasphere and communication technologies have brought for the contemporary subject\, submitting him/her to the tyranny of a new attention economy. My point is that the contemporary novel and memoir resist such influences and evince a great deal of resilience by promoting an “ecology of attention” (Citton) based on poetic options whose pragmatic effect is to develop an ethics of the particularist type. To do this\, I draw on critical and theoretical literature hailing from various fields: psychology\, but also more prominently phenomenology\, political philosophy\, and analytical philosophy (essentially Ordinary Language Philosophy)\, alongside the ethics of care and vulnerability. By using a selection of fictional and non-fictional narratives\, I address such issues as social invisibilities\, climate change\, AI and cognitive disability and end up drafting a poetics of attention.\n  \n

SUMMARY:SEM Transculturalismes :  Corentin Jégou\, "Pieces of Utopia: Imagining globalisation in anglophone Caribbean literature"
DESCRIPTION:Sylvia Wynter’s The Hills of Hebron (1962) and Robert Antoni’s As Flies to Whatless Boys (2013) both revolve around utopian schemes\, set in Jamaica and Trinidad respectively. Wynter’s novel chronicles the establishment of a millenarian commune by Prophet Moses and his followers at the turn of the twentieth century\, while Antoni’s narrative relates the tribulations of the socialistic Tropical Emigration Society in the 1840s. In both cases\, the utopian enterprise meets with disaster. The prophets turn out to be charlatans\, bent on personal aggrandisement at the expense of their unsuspecting disciples. \nIn this paper\, I explore the political and aesthetic underpinnings of Wynter’s and Antoni’s failed utopias. While they both seem to share in the anti-utopian scepticism which accompanies periods of political exhaustion\, is there anything to be salvaged from among the debris? Can we not at least reclaim a sense of what Fredric Jameson has called “anti-anti-Utopianism” by looking at those failures from a global perspective? While taking stock of the pessimism which permeates Wynter’s and Antoni’s works\, I contend that the panorama is not quite so despairing as it would seem\, and that the transnational texture of their narratives may function as an antidote to the bankruptcy of their utopian blueprints.

SUMMARY:SEM PACT « Surveillance Imaginings »
DESCRIPTION:Surveillance Aesthetics & Machinic Poetics in Contemporary Literary Fiction \nThis talk will consider an aesthetic and poetic ‘turn’ in recent literary fiction concerned with themes of surveillance in novels such as Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West (2017) and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun (2021). Focusing on the affective states and subjective representation of surveillance in the contemporary novel\, it will explore how the experience of digital surveillance is characterised as much by the aesthetic (popular culture\, formalism\, visuality\, imagery) as it is by the technological (machines\, data\, artificial intelligence\, infrastructure). It asks how emergent surveillant subjectivities are being articulated through literary language\, a form in which rhetorical\, semantic\, and affective subtleties are represented and worked out. By turning to poetics—as a heuristic for moving beyond technological determinism—the talk argues for the significance of literary fiction as a crucial space for probing the ethical and cultural implications of contemporary surveillance in relation to the self\, critical thinking\, and creative expression. \n  \nTyne Daile Sumner is a researcher in The School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. Working across literary studies\, surveillance studies and digital humanities\, her research examines cultural representations of surveillance in literature\, film\, art\, popular media and public discourse. Her first book is Lyric Eye: The Poetics of Twentieth-Century Surveillance (Routledge 2021). DESCRIPTION:Présentation par Sandrine Parageau de son ouvrage : \n  \n\nIn the early modern period\, ignorance was commonly perceived as a sin\, a flaw\, a defect\, and even a threat to religion and the social order. Yet praises of ignorance were also expressed in the same context. Reclaiming the long-lasting legacy of medieval doctrines of ignorance and taking a comparative perspective\, Sandrine Parageau tells the history of the apparently counter-intuitive moral\, cognitive and epistemological virtues attributed to ignorance in the long seventeenth century (1580s-1700) in England and in France. \nWith close textual analysis of hitherto neglected sources and a reassessment of canonical philosophical works by Montaigne\, Bacon\, Descartes\, Locke\, and others\, Parageau specifically examines the role of ignorance in the production of knowledge\, identifying three common virtues of ignorance as a mode of wisdom\, a principle of knowledge\, and an epistemological instrument\, in philosophical and theological works. How could an essentially negative notion be turned into something profitable and even desirable? Taken in the context of Renaissance humanism\, the Reformation and the « Scientific Revolution »—which all called for a redefinition and reaffirmation of knowledge—ignorance\, Parageau finds\, was not dismissed in the early modern quest for renewed ways of thinking and knowing. On the contrary\, it was assimilated into the philosophical and scientific discourses of the time. The rehabilitation of ignorance emerged as a paradoxical cornerstone of the nascent modern science. \n  \n\nAbout the author \n\nSandrine Parageau is Professor of Early Modern British History at Sorbonne University and a Fellow of the Institut Universitaire de France.
